About the Item

Ernst Hase (1889 Münster-1968 Münster) “Flower Still Life with Vase” Watercolor and gouache on paper, signed lower left Framed with an antique molding, signed 1889 Ernst Hase was born on September 26 in Münster. He was one of nine children, including six sisters. 1895-1905 Hase attended the Paulinum School in Münster, but it is not known how long he stayed there. He was described as a problem student: he preferred to paint under his desk rather than pay attention in class. He then attended Caesar Eimermacher's drawing school. 1907 At the age of eighteen, Hase began studying at the academy in Munich and was accepted into the class of landscape painter Karl Raupp (1858-1918), known as the “Chiemsee painter,” and that of history painter Carl von Marr (1858-1936). 1913 He probably attended the Berlin Academy that year. There he was a student of the genre painter Maximilian Schäfer (1851-1919). 1914-18 Hase was a soldier. The experiences of the war and its consequences do not seem to have had any direct influence on his artistic work. 1919 After the war, Hase moved to Düsseldorf and became a master student of Prof. Kiederich (1873-1950). Kiederich was one of the professors of the Düsseldorf School who followed the academic tradition and took no notice of the new stylistic trends. He painted dignified impressionist portraits, landscapes, and Dutch interiors with a realistic touch. He exerted a significant influence on Ernst Hase's painting. It is noteworthy that Hase always chose teachers at the academy who were committed to tradition. Hase was certainly also influenced by French painters such as those of the Barbizon school, whose style was characterized by a special closeness to nature. He was also familiar with the Hague School (Anton Mauve, M. Marris) and the Dutch painters of the 17th century. During his time in Düsseldorf, Hase occasionally visited the coffee shop of “Mutter Ey” (Johanna Ey, 1864-1947), which was a meeting place for artists and where many of them were able to exhibit their work for the first time. 1922 Hase joined the “Freie Künstlergemeinschaft Schanze” (Free Artists' Association Schanze) in Münster (founded in 1919) and was represented in their first exhibition at the Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte (Westphalian State Museum of Art and Cultural History) in Münster. Artistically, he did not have much to do with the “Schanzers,” but he exhibited with them and celebrated extensively with them at large and small parties. Hase painted a portrait of one of these Schanze painters, Carl Busch, and is said to have occasionally painted with him. Hase was also a member of the Reich Association of Visual Artists in Berlin and the Malkasten artists' association in Düsseldorf. 1930-32 During these years, Hase traveled to several Mediterranean countries. He brought back a rich artistic harvest from his travels. Impressed and influenced by the southern light, his colors became brighter. 1932 The painter became “chancellor” of the “Schanze” artists' association. 1933 Due to political events, Hase resigned in February. He was courted by the NSDAP; Gauleiter Meyer even offered him a professorship. Hase remained unimpressed. He believed that “when the National Socialists' cultural program was announced, there should have been a million-strong outcry across the country.” During these years, Hase had a close friendship with the poet and lyricist Adolf von Hatzfeld, whom he portrayed several times. 1937 Hase traveled to South Africa (Letabe District, North Transvaal) at the invitation of Ludwig Brinkmann from Münster. He was a researcher there in his own artistic way and was considered a painterly explorer of this area. 1938-39 He bought a cottage in Hembergen (between Greven and Emsdetten) on the Ems River, from which he undertook hikes so that he could work directly in nature. During the war, this place provided a home for his family, who had been bombed out. 1937-39 He traveled to Holland, Belgium, France, England, Spain, Rottach-Egern, and the Sauerland, among other places. 1945 After the war, Hase primarily painted landscapes and views of Münster, the surrounding area, and impressions from his many travels. Portraits took a back seat. 1950 Hase met his partner Liselotte Dannasch, who accompanied his work with interest and a critical eye. 1951-60 He traveled to Holland (1951), Mallorca (1954), and Stavanger in Norway (1961), among other places. On his 70th birthday: exhibition at the Municipal Museum in Osnabrück. 1968 Ernst Hase died on June 3 in Münster. Since at least the 1930s, Ernst Hase was known and appreciated in Westphalia not only as a portraitist, but also as a painter of Münster and the Münsterland region. Looking back on his life's work, he was hailed as the “picturesque discoverer of the Ems.” His lifelong insistence on a style influenced by Impressionism, undeterred by modern art movements, was viewed positively as an expression of his humanism and conservative Westphalianism.
