"The Fields, " Magical View of Moroccan Landscape with Male Nude by Jacques Azéma
About the Item
Suffused with the soft, rich colors that Jacques Azéma was known for, this view of a Moroccan landscape ("Les Champs" in French) includes a seated male youth with a teapot and glasses for tea to the left, and an elegantly-robed mother with child to the right. The scene is richly painted in veiled hues of grassy green, pink and maize, and the scene seems as still as a quiet dream. Indeed, Azéma was influenced by the Surrealists throughout his career, most of which was spent in Morocco. He settled there in 1930, teaching for years at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca, and working in the medina in Marrakech. As M-F Giacolette and C. Gonzáles-Aller noted, "“His small-format paintings are like jewels that reveal a dreamlike representation of Morocco, a landscape of the unconscious whose pictorial language is closer to that of a true Surrealist inspired by Giorgio de Chirico or Pierre Puvis de Chavannes." An important exhibition of Azéma's work was organized by Musée YVES SAINT LAURENT Marrakech in the past year. The medium is gouache on paper. (Dimensions include matte and frame.)
