About the Item

Henri Alphonse Barnoin (1882-1940) studied with Emile Charles Dameron at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1912 he moved to the small community of Concarneau in Northwest France, where he took a studio near the port on Quai Peneroff. It was while there that he met & became a member of a group of artists known as The Group of Concarneau. During that time, he painted several works of harbour scenes, as well as town views depicting the local Bretons going about their daily lives as fishermen, merchants & market vendors. In 1921 he exhibited works at the Salon de Paris where he received the Silver Medal, he exhibited at the Salon again in 1935 and was then awarded the prestigious Gold Medal. This fine example of his work is executed with oil on canvas, signed bottom right and set within what appears to be it's fine, original gilt gesso frame, titled on the stretcher together with framer’s stamp for M. Gadin, Paris. Sight dimensions, 14.5” high x 17.5” wide, frame dimensions, 20.75” high x 24” wide x 2.5” deep.
