About the Item
A good example of Scandinavian mid-century classic modernism: A large oil painting by Danish painter Svend Aage Arvidsen (1908-1981). The painting features a fine costal landscape from the Danish island of Bornholm. The scene could possibly depict the cliffs around the harbor of Allinge, a fishing village on the north-east coastline. The two chimneys in the distance would belong to the smokehouse where herrings have been smoked since the late 19th century.
Numerous artists came to the island in the beginning of the 20th century inspired by the island's unique landscapes and light. They are today referred to as The Bornholm School of Painters.
The painting is signed S. Arvidsen in the lower right corner but not dated. However, the painting is likely to date from the 1940/50s. The painting is made on thick cardboard (the motif is painted on the textured side of the cardboard) and is nicely framed in a white and ocra colored wooden frame.
Svend Arvidsen, born July 24, 1908 in Denmark, started his career as an apprentice at a stonemasonry. He also took classes in technical and freehand drawing. Drawn to the art of painting, he soon began to paint under the supervision of Mogens Ege, a formally educated painter from the island of Bornholm. S. Arvidsen undertook several foreign study trips during his career and frequently exposed his work in Denmark.
Throughout his career as a fine artist, Svend Arvidsens favorite motifs were motifs of seascapes and harbors, much like this painting here.
The painting is in good vintage condition. It has no holes, no missing paint, no repairs or other flaws. The painting has some very minor scratches on the surface. The frame shows signs of wear/scratches coherent with age and travel (today the painting is located in France). The painting and the frame have just been lightly cleaned. No restorations have been done. The back is clean.
