An early rare watercolor on paper depicting a bird by Mexican artist Francisco Toledo. The paper work is signed 59 on the lower right. The work is framed.
Painting's dimensions: 42.5 x 49.5 cm.
Frame's dimensions: 56 x 63 x 3.5 cm.
Francisco Benjamín López Toledo (1940 - 2019) is one of the last worldwide known Mexican artists. Born in Juchitán, Oaxaca, An avid drawer since early age, he studied painting and drawing at the Oaxaca City School of Fine Arts. He also studied engraving under Arturo García Bustos. In 1960, at age 20, he established in Paris, where he befriended Octavio Paz and Rufino Tamayo; with Paz's help, he was able to expose his work all around Europe.
Toledo was a dedicated student of his birthplace's customs, language and folk art, which nurtured his artistic work. He also excelled as a social activist and cultural promoter who established many foundations, galleries and workshop that still work until today. At the time of his demise, Toledo was Mexico's most important living artist.

Francisco Toledo
Francisco Toledo was a Mexican Zapotec painter, sculptor and graphic artist. Throughout his career, he was dedicated to promoting and defending the arts and culture of his birthplace, Oaxaca, Mexico. From a very young age, Toledo's artistic talent and abilities were recognized. He studied art in Oaxaca, during his youth and as a young man, moved to Paris, to continue his studies. While residing in France, he traveled throughout Europe, where he saw and was influenced by the work of many artists, including Paul Klee and Jean Dubuffet. However, unlike these European artists, Francisco Toledo's work never became completely abstract.
