JEAN JACQUES BERNE-BELLECOUR French, 1874-1939 A Game of Cards (1906) Oil on cradeled panel signed lower right "Jean Berne Bellecour 1906" housed in the original giltwood frame Item # 403IEX11P A very fun depiction of French hussar soldiers passing the hours with a game of cards in a dark room, the room is austere and sparsely furnished with only two chairs, a wooden tavern table, a painting of a military figure on horseback and a few dishes with a half-eated loaf of bread on the windowsill. It has all the atmosphere of an abandoned tavern or hostel where the military figures have likely been stationed. Berne-Bellecour's ability to convey the very essence of his subjects is what made his work so poignant with his patrons; the present example is no exception, where he has explored each soldier as an individual fully invested in this game of cards. The figure on the right exhibits tension and even irritation, laying his card out almost as a dare to the thoughtful soldier on the left. The work is executed on cradled artist's panel and is housed in what is almost certainly the original frame, noting the close match-up in oxidization between the panel and the frame. It is signed in the lower right and dated 1906. Jean Jacques Berne-Bellecour was a French painter known for his military and landscape scenes. Born on November 24, 1874, in Boulogne-sur-Mer, he was the son of Étienne-Prosper Berne-Bellecour, the esteemed painter and engraver. Jean Jacques followed in his father's artistic footsteps, studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He trained under the guidance of both Gérôme and Édouard Detaille in addition to his father, develpping a style characterized by precise attention to detail and a keen observation of his figures. Like his father, Jean Jacques' work primarily focused on military subjects. His paintings depicted soldiers, battlefields, and military life with a realistic and meticulous approach. He participated in several exhibitions at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he was a member, winning a commendation in 1912 and numerous medals thereafter. In 1924 he exhibited at the Sociéte Nationale des Beaux-Arts and in 1926 and 1939 he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. Further, he had numerous solo exhibitions dedicated to him including in Mulhouse, Douai, Lille and Lyons. In addition to military scenes, Berne-Bellecour also painted landscapes, capturing the French countryside with a similar attention to detail and realism. His ability to convey the atmosphere and mood of his subjects earned him recognition among his contemporaries and his work was widely collected by notable political and military figures, including both General Pershing and Clemenceau. Berne-Bellecour's paintings are held in various public and private collections, including the museums in Mullhouse, Paris at the Musee de l'Armée and San Francisco. Le Blant" Item # 301OIV16Z A moving study of a very young man hugging and kissing his father goodbye as the French Navy has arrived at his home to collect him for conscription to military service. His mother grips a hankerchief in one hand as she watches her teenage son with a complex expression that bridges grief and perhaps anger. His younger brother likely does not grasp the totality of the situation, dragging behind his feet a toy boat. The bright colors and vibrant life of the rural farm is juxtaposed against a deep sorrow. The present example dates from 1888 and was mentioned in the Gazette anecdotique et Littéraire of the same year. It is included in the ongoing catalogue research project on the works of Julien Le Blant by Dominique Formaz and is documented at Leblant. com JULIEN LE BLANT Julien Le Blant studied under E. Girard and made his debut at Salon in 1874. His work was regularly recognized, ultimately receiving the gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. He was made Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1885. The body of his work largely focuses on military scenes, particularly of the French Revolution, but also scenes of the First World War later in life. He completed hundreds of illustrations for a great number of books, including Les Chouans (Honoré de Balzac), Chevalier des Touches (Barbey d'Aurevilly), and Premier Grenadier de France (Paul Dérouléde) to name a few. His work is held in major museum collections and institutions around the world. For serious collectors of militarism and of the Romantic painters of the period, this is a simply outstanding investment grade selection. Works by Julien Le Blant very rarely make their way to the the open market. Presumably the owner of the field, an older man has come out in the heat of the afternoon to greet the soldiers with a basket of wine bottles, offering a glass to the officers while chatting casually with them. Perhaps he is a local guide offering a sense of what the soldiers might expect in the rural countryside, but more likely it is simply a moment of reprieve in the idyllic countryside and a distinct juxtaposition to the intensity and drama of Perboyre's battle scenes. The Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) was the last use of "cuirassiers" in the French army with uniforms characterized by the distinct helmets known as a "casque à crinière" featuring a plume of horsehair. Hampe '81" Item # 106QJY03C An incredibly powerful Romantic landscape of the Alpine mountains with a waterfall cascading into a valley, the river pouring over the rocks and curving around the bend, flowing past a pair of figures seated on a grassy noll with a transcendant unearthly lighting that creates a focal point of the couple. It is as if the clouds have opened up just to shine light on them, emphasizing the glorious day the man and woman are experiencing on this leisurely hike through nature. Painted by Guido Hampe in 1881, the painting was acquired by Charles S. Shultz, president of the Hoboken Bank in Montclair, New Jersey where it remained in his home until its deaccession from the home in 2021. The home was particularly interesting for its total originality, the interior looking almost identical throughout its entire life to how it appeared at its inception in 1896. Enclosed in the collection of images is a shot of the painting in situ over the living room fireplace as captured by the Montclair Magazine article on the home in 2020. The work is signed in his typical script lower right "G. Hampe / 81". It remains housed in the original and substantial giltwood frame, fully restored and a very powerful presentation. Surface bright and vibrant. Retains the original frame that we have had professionally restored with trace regilding and inpainting, some elements recreated; the restoration has preserved the antique nature of the frame and all restoration has been toned to match the aged aesthetic of the frame.
