Early 19th century, Napoleonic period oil painting on an oak panel.
If you are looking for early 19th century, French art with a military topic then this romantic style rural scene could be perfect for you. This painting with all the period elements such as the clothing, furniture, building ornaments and military gear is like a time capsule. The French, high ranked officer at the centre of this painting is saluting one of his men outside the tavern and the strong tavern lady can't wait to fill their cups once more. They must have something to celebrate and the beautiful white horse in the back too has earned his or her meal. The combination of the romantic style, the warm colors and the overall scene with everything that is going on makes this antique work of art an absolute joy to own and look at. This scenic and decorative painting is signed in the lower left corner (see image 16), but unfortunately we cannot 'decipher' it.
