About the Item

Impressive and very beautiful oil on panel made by Paul Robert Bazé, an artist of French origin. It represents a still life with a bouquet of flowers in the foreground on a dark background. It mainly shows dahlias and camellias, which give the work its name. The traditional still life genre shows its evolution here. It presents the characteristic style of the genre to which it corresponds, realistic and meticulous, especially noticeable in the way it works with the different qualities of the flowers and leaves. The dark background is also inherited from the still life genre, with a marked dark interest reflected in the dark backgrounds. Signed in the lower left corner. Paul Robert Bazé (1901-1985) was born in Paris, although he soon moved to Bayonne and then to Bordeaux, where he was a student of Paul Quinsac at the School of Fine Arts. In 1924 he returned to Paris, thanks to a scholarship that allowed him to join the workshop of Lucien Simon, who became his main teacher. He was nominated on several occasions for the Grand Prix of Rome, of which he won the second prize in 1927 with his work La Mélancolie and the first the following year with Concert champêtre. In 1929 he moved to Rome, to the Villa Medicis, and spent another season in Naples. During 1935 and 1936 he was interned as a boarder at the Casa Velázquez in Madrid. At the end of the 1930s he settled permanently in Bayonne. In 1967 he was appointed curator of the Bonnat Museum in Bayonne. There he spent the rest of his life. Flower Still Life with Dahlias, Oil on Canvas, Gaston Geleyn, Dated 1934
Located in Casteren, Noord-Brabant
Flower still life with dahlias, in beautiful, vibrant colors. Oil on canvas. The round format is very unusual. Frame and canvas are an original whole. The painting is signed in the paint on the lower right and dated, 1934. The painting is framed behind anti-reflective glass, which means that the colors are beautifully preserved. The frame is subtly carved in Art Deco style. A similar painting by the same painter is depicted in an old exhibition book by this painter. See picture. His work work has also been purchased by various museums. The book about Gaston Geleyn is beautifully illustrated, 170 pages and it is about the life and work of the artist. The book was published in 1933. Book is supplied with the painting. More information about the Gaston Geleyn follows below. Source: Paul Piron 'Art in Belgium'. After the First World War he traveled the world and stayed in America, India and North Africa, among other places. He was under contract from 1919 to 1929 by a Dutch art dealer. His first exhibition was at the 'Giroux' Gallery in Brussels in 1933. Geleyn painted landscapes, marines, figure still lifes and flowers. He also painted the portrait of King Albert I.
