About the Item

Technique on stand: Oil on board Title of the work: "Saint Tropez" Author: Gabriel Dechamps (1919 – 2011) Signed in the lower right corner Period: Second half of the 20th century Country of origin: France Good condition according to its age and use Overall dimensions: 83 x 96 x 6 cm. Dimensions without frame: 58 x 71 cm Wonderful oil on canvas where we see a harbor scene of the city of Saint Tropez. Signed by Gabriel Deschamps in the bottom right corner, it is in very good condition. It is a beautiful and serene scene created with loose brushstrokes of blues, reds and browns. It highlights the contrast of dark shades of the harbor foreground, and the bright, light and soft shades of the city; as well as the magnificent treatment of light. Complex composition, the viewer is introduced to the scene thanks to the boats moored in the first term as well as the action of the man in the dock. The work features a magnificent frame in the Montparnasse bohemian style. Gabriel Deschamps was an artist born in France in 1919, in Bonneville. He became known as a painter of seascapes and genre in the south of France. He studied at the École Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris between 1939 and 1940. His paintings stand out because they perfectly capture the fresh and vibrant colors as well as the intense quality of the light of the region. This is an artist who has the ability to bring an authentic sense of life to his paintings, who mastered and refined his skills to create pieces with fluid brushstrokes and vibrant tones. He painted mainly scenes from the south of France and the Mediterranean coast and held numerous exhibitions in Paris, Algiers, Oran and Casablanca. Much of his work is in important private collections in Switzerland, Belgium, Brazil, the United States and Argentina. Saint Tropez is a French coastal city well known among artists and people of rigor. It was a fishing village that was “rediscovered” by the neo-impressionist painter Paul Signac. The city then gained a bohemian reputation attracting many intellectuals and painters. The port was destroyed in World War II but was rebuilt in 1950. Its reputation for glamor and luxury was enshrined when the movie “And God Created Woman” starring Brigitte Bardot was filmed. An amazing work of art!!!
