About the Item
Vividly painted in a palette of white, brilliant blue and ruddy skin tones, this portrait of a bearded Greek youth with ruddy complexion and green eyes was painted by Julius Bloch in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Bloch was fascinated by African American life earlier in his career, and painted many Black figures -- male and female -- that were widely exhibited. Later in his life he traveled to Greece and the Mediterranean, painting scenes such as this that were filled with bright color and vivid atmosphere. In this case, the young man's large eyes, expressive mouth and sunburned complexion make him a compelling subject. The medium is oil on canvas; the elaborate frame is original.
