Hans Viksten’s oil painting from 1962 titled MALLORCA (signed on back) is a striking summer depiction of a Mediterranean memory.
The Swedish maestro has a gestural quality to his paint strokes that feel very vivid, expressive and alive. I love his work and own several of his paintings during his larger sized painting era in the 1960’s.
The quality of life in this work is important something you can taste - it has an evocative nature and dreamlike feeling.
A Swedish outlier, Hans Viksten studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and was later a professor at the Stockholm Academy of arts. His work intersects through many different mediums but has always been referred too as a ‘fantasy painter’ with motifs inspired by Swedish forests, lakes, and ridges - cloaked with a layer of mystery. He is an incredible storyteller virtuoso that blended poetic descriptions into his paintings but mostly they were accompanied by them.. a sort of hand in hand love letter to his country, and in this case - to Spain.
