About the Item

The Honorable John Maler Collier (British, 1850-1934) was an important artist who painted portraits, dramatic themes, and landscapes. Maler painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style, and was one of the most prominent portrait painters of his generation. He was educated at the Eton School and studied art in Munich and Heidelberg, as well as at the Slade School under Poynter and in Paris under Laurens. He also was encouraged by Millais and Alma-Tadema. Presented is a large hillside and river landscape signed oil painting by Collier. Framed it measures 48" wide, 30.5" high and 3" deep. Canvas is 42" wide and 24" high. Frame has very light wear. Painting is in very fine condition. Collier was one of the 24 founding members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, of which he became Vice President and was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He exhibited no fewer than one hundred and thirty paintings at the Royal Academy and one hundred and sixty five at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, as well as many others in galleries throughout the country and abroad. He was the author of The Primer of Art (1882), A Manual of Oil Painting (1886) and The Art of Portrait Painting (1905). He was awarded the O.B.E. in 1920 and he was the subject of The Art of the Honourable John Collier (1914) by W.H. Pollock, published by the Art Journal, which lists all his most important subjects between 1875 and 1914, which included portraits, historical and other dramatic scenes. It has fifty illustrations and six colour plates of his works, and an interesting photograph of his studio.

Raymond C. Boothe, Starlings in a Winter Landscape, 1976
By Raymond C. Booth
Located in Montclair, NY
Starlings in a Winter Landscape by British artist Raymond C. Boothe (1929-2015). Oil on canvas in a hand carved custom frame. Framed the dimensions are 35" wide, 29.38" high and 2.5 inches deep. The canvas measures 24" wide and 18.75" high. Boothe, a Leeds artist, is known as of one of Britain's most accomplished botanical, wildlife and natural history artists. He was represented by the Fine Art Society for 50 years, where he had eight exhibitions. This painting has been in a private collection for the past 30/40 years and was purchased from the art dealer Henri Tiercet. Despite rarely leaving his native Yorkshire, Booth developed an international reputation as a leading botanical and natural history artist. He Spent much of his career in his private studio at home in Alwoodley – an 'inner sanctuary', which no one besides the artist was permitted to enter. Booth's meticulous rendering of wildlife, woodlands, meadows and heathland found admiration far beyond the bounds of his beloved Adel Woods, where he spent much of his time studying and refining his technique, even 'sleeping under hedgerows', remembers Peyton. A plantsman as well as an artist, Booth would cultivate flowers, plants and botanical specimens at home in the garden before painting them in the studio. It was through this extensive and painstaking process that Booth developed an expert knowledge of his subject, a defining feature of his work. Starlings in a Winter Landscape was purchased in the 1980s from Henri Tiercet and owner of Henri Tiercet Galleries Inc...
