About the Item
One of the finest examples of illustration art and Art Deco painting we have ever offered, this elegant and sophisticated view of New Yorkers skating arm in arm on a frozen pond or lake is simply stunning. It was painted in 1927 for an advertisement in Country Life magazine promoting ski and skating wear sold by B. Altman & Co., one of New York's premier department stores, located on Fifth Avenue at 34th Street. Each of the figures shown in the painting are stylized and polished, and their clothing and hair styles represent the Jazz Age at its most sophisticated. The painting is executed in ink and watercolor on heavy paper. After the advertisement was published, at some point the painting was trimmed slightly, but the main image is fully intact.
