About the Item

A beautiful rendering of an Italian Mediterranean village at night, this oil on canvas was painted by Nicola Ascione. The clear grayish-blue sky hovers over a gently sloping hill lined with buildings and a visible mountain in the background. Ascione dotted the landscape with splashes of color, such as the yellow and orange hues depicting illuminated windows of the houses closest to the shore, even showing the light in the reflection of the water. The horizontal painting is enclosed by a giltwood frame embellished with shallowly carved cavitations of various sizes along the outer edges and solid molding along the interior. In between the layers of gilding is a slender and recessed red molding surrounding a brown cavetto molding. Nicola Ascione was born in Italy in 1870. Originally from the Neopolitan commune of Torre del Greco, Ascione had a very productive career, producing many paintings that can be found across Europe and even the United States. The subjects of Ascione’s paintings ranged from still life to portraits, but most of his works seemed to center around city landscapes and architectural illustrations.

Oil Painting from 1937 Harbor View by Carles Bisschops, Oil on Panel
Located in Casteren, Noord-Brabant
Beautiful and vivid painting, oil paint on panel. The painting shows a picturesque harbor on the French Mediterranean. This work is by the Flemish painter Charles-Louis Bisschops (Liège, April 25, 1894 - Rossignol, 1975). The painting has a somewhat impressionistic touch and a beautiful use of color. The blue color of the water contrasts nicely with the shady buildings. The painting is framed in a classic wooden gilded frame. On the back of the painting is an old label stating that the painting was painted in the French port of Ferrier (near Marseille on the Mediterranean). The painting is clearly signed and dated 1937. Charles Bisschops has his own Wikipedia page, information about this: Charles Bisschops was a Belgian painter, graphic artist and draftsman. He was a student at the Academy of Brussels from 1912 to 1919. The main professors were Jean Delville and Constant Montald.
