About the Item

Joseph H. Greenwood (Massachusetts, 1857-1927), "New England Landscape" - Oil on Board, 14.75" w x 12.25" h. Joseph Greenwood, renowned for his evocative portrayals of New England’s natural beauty. This finely executed painting captures a serene woodland scene, where vibrant autumn foliage contrasts against the delicate, cool hues of the sky. The composition is masterfully balanced, with a winding path leading the viewer’s eye through the richly textured forest, showcasing Greenwood's exceptional command of light and shadow. Greenwood's nuanced palette expertly conveys the seasonal transition, blending warm tones of amber, rust, and gold with subtle shades of green and blue. The artist’s brushwork exhibits a harmonious blend of impressionistic spontaneity and realistic detail, imbuing the landscape with depth and atmospheric perspective. This treatment of light and color exemplifies Greenwood’s dedication to capturing the fleeting beauty of New England’s landscapes. Signed in the lower left, the painting is an authentic example of Greenwood's mature period, reflecting his profound connection to the American landscape tradition. A prominent figure within the Massachusetts art community, Greenwood was celebrated for his plein air technique, which brought vitality and immediacy to his compositions. His works are noted for their lyrical quality and evocative representation of nature's changing moods. Presented in an ornate giltwood frame adorned with acanthus leaf corner decorations, the frame’s classical design enhances the painting’s aesthetic appeal while complementing its historical context. This work stands as a testament to Greenwood's legacy as one of New England’s foremost landscape painters, offering an elegant and contemplative vision of the American autumnal countryside.

Tonalist Landscape
Located in Milford, NH
A fine tonalist landscape by American artist J. Francis Murphy (1853-1921). Murphy was born in Oswego, New York, he moved to Chicago in 1868, where his father was employed in the shipping industry. In Chicago, Murphy began working as a scene painter in a local theatre and was quickly promoted to lead his co-workers. Largely self-taught, his only training consisted of a few classes at the Chicago Academy of Design. There he became friends with Emil Carlsen and Theodore Robinson, and in 1873, Academy members elected him an Associate; a few weeks later, he became an Academician. His work was first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1876, where he was inducted eleven years later. He won numerous prizes, medals and honors for his landscape paintings, which are said to rank with those of George Inness, Alexander Wyant, and Homer Martin. Although his world was a limited one, his landscapes captured the forms of nature and the subtle nuances of the scene. Murphy was referred to as the "American Corot" because of his similarity to the painting style of Camille Corot (1796-1875), one of the original Barbizon...
