*****
Karl Larsen (1897–1977) was a Danish painter known for his atmospheric landscapes, urban scenes, and his pivotal role in the development of early Modernism in Denmark. He was a founding member of De Fire ("The Four"), an avant-garde artist group established in 1920 together with Vilhelm Lundstrøm, Svend Johansen, and Axel Salto. That same year, he also exhibited with Den Frie Udstilling, reflecting his early commitment to experimental and independent artistic expression. De Fire held seven influential exhibitions between 1920 and 1929 and continue to be studied and exhibited today.
From as early as 1917, Larsen exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris and later at Maison Watteau. He was also a frequent participant in Danish exhibitions, including the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibitions in Copenhagen. With the help of prestigious scholarships - such as the Stoltenberg (1921) and Zach Jacobsen (1924) - he stayed in Paris during the 1920 to study and work. In 1926, he was awarded the Academy Fellowship, and in 1929, he received a lifetime studio apartment from the Vilhelm Pacht Foundation.
Larsen explored a wide range of forms and materials throughout his career. His lifelong artistic practice was marked by a deep investigation into composition and materiality. In addition to painting, he mastered and taught techniques in sculpture, graphics, marquetry, mosaic, and stained glass. He amongst other collaborated with the Danish Royal Porcelain Factory (later Royal Copenhagen), bringing his creative vision into ceramic and decorative arts.
