*****
Kay Christensen (1899–1981) was a Danish painter and illustrator celebrated for his poetic, dreamlike imagery and delicate use of color. He first studied with Marie Sandholt and Astrid Holm and later at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (1929–31). His artistic development was shaped by extensive travels, including to Germany and Austria (1913–14), Paris (1917–23), and Budapest and Vienna (1934). In 1935, he was awarded the Michaelsen Scholarship, enabling repeated stays in Paris during the late 1930s. Many years in France made him deeply familiar with French art, and he was influenced by both Cubism and Fauvism—traces of which can be seen throughout his work.
Christensen began in the bold colors and defined forms of Fauvism and Cubism but gradually moved toward predominantly monochrome works, often in blue or green with subtle shades of white. His subjects included landscapes and urban scenes, both interior and exterior, with women and children as central figures, as well as portraiture.
He exhibited internationally with great success, earning numerous prizes, medals, and juried awards. After the Second World War, he continued to return regularly to Paris to paint. His works are held in both private and public collections, including the National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst) and Copenhagen’s Metropolitan Museum.
