About the Item
This is a KPM style hand painted plaque of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The bright colors of her robes highlight her porcelain skin. She appears holding a book with her right hand & a pen in the other hand. The plaque has a carved plaster and wood gilt frame that is embellished with scrolls of acanthus leaves around it, rocailles in the joints and branches of flowers. Saint Catherine was both a Christian princess and scholar who converted hundreds of people to Christianity. She was martyred at 18 years of age by the emperor Maxentius. She was one of the saints who appeared to Joan of Arc and counseled her. The plaque is signed Ens below the right arm.
