About the Item
A lovely and bucolic depiction of the American wilderness in 1876, only partly tamed by American settlers, this oil painting depicts a shallow, rocky stream with blue-tinted mountains in the distance -- possibly the Catskills -- and is signed by John Howell Wilson. The artist's palette is lovely -- fresh greens, blue-grays and reddish browns -- and he captures a group of milk cows in the stream, as well as a boy tending to them sitting on the banks of the stream. This painting was once owned by Sarah J. Libbey, a member of the Libbey family of glass-making fame. (Dimensions include frame).
