"Bucolic Lakeside with Swans, " Metropolitan Opera Backdrop Design, 1930

About the Item

Lovely and bucolic, this view of an idyllic lakeside landscape, complete with classical sculpture, a pair of swans, and brilliantly-colored flowering trees, was painted by George Stimmel for the Metropolitan Opera in New York, either as a set piece or to suggest the backdrop for an opera production in 1930. Stimmel's work was exhibited at the Knoedler Gallery in New York, but his opera paintings are extremely rare. The painting retains its original frame with a beautiful, molded bell flower motif.
