Large 17th Century Oil on Canvas Painting of Saint Augustine

About the Item

This large oil on canvas painting from the 1600’s portrays Saint Augustine in his library. The venerable scholar is depicted wearing a gold mitre embellished with floral rinceaux. His scarlet red chasuble is embroidered with gold arabesque and curled leaf motifs, offering a stark contrast from the darkened background. Books are piled up behind Augustine, as he holds a pen and an open hard-covered book, indicating that he is in the process of writing one of his theological manuscripts. The giltwood frame (20th C.) that surrounds the canvas has delicate carvings on all sides. Motifs include spiral fluting, infilled lunettes, and a repetitive geometric pattern. At the bottom of the frame is a plaque that reads “Saint Augustine 17th Century”. Augustine was born in 354 in Thagaste, Algeria, at the time, a Roman municipality. A Berber by birth, Augustine converted to Christianity in 386 and would eventually become bishop of the ancient city Hippo Regius, hence the moniker “Augustine of Hippo”. Augustine was canonized in 1298 by Pope Boniface VIII and is considered the patron saint of brewers, printers, and theologians. Standing at nearly 5 feet high (framed), this elegant portrayal of Saint Augustine will become the focal point of any wall on which it’s hung. One of the most well known St Augustine paintings was executed in 1480 by Sandro Botticelli. The Botticelli painting, like the one seen here, show Augustine in his study, viewed from his left side, writing a letter or manuscript with a richly decorated mitre. The background of this painting is quite dark, as was often the case in dramatic 17th century figural/portrait paintings. This places an emphasis on the soft lighting and rich color used on the Saint and his vestment.

Measuring 56 H x 67 W, this large Dutch oil on canvas painting from the 1700s depicts a Southern landscape of a glen beneath a rocky cliff. The expansive valley stretches far into the distance, before terminating at a lake in front of a mountain. Numerous flocks of sheep can be seen throughout the basin, including a group high up on the towering cliff with green trees dotting the sand-colored rock. Most of the flocks in the distance are being tended to by shepherds, but interestingly, a group of four men has gathered in the foreground to engage in leisurely activities as their sheep, cows, goat, and dog await nearby. A few chateaus can be seen in the distance, but most of the architecture is in the style of a capriccio, in that they are dilapidated. The top of a stone obelisk is missing and there are some losses to the inscribed pedestal next to it that supports a lidded urn. Large pieces of broken rock are scattered about, with one slab being used as a seat/table for two shepherds playing cards. Several birds fly in the blue sky, with the setting sun giving the clouds hues of gray, orange, and pink. This large (110 inches high) oil on canvas painting depicts a successful hunter, with his felled game displayed near his retriever dogs. Our hunter is leaning against a stone pedestal, clad in blue coat and pants with his rifle beneath his right hand. The man is wearing a gold cap with red fabric attached to it and has a sword on his left hip. Three retriever dogs stand to the hunter’s left, while a fourth sits in front of him (the man appears to be motioning to this dog with his left hand). An orange terra cotta vase adorned with spiral fluting sits on top of a molded plinth at the top of the pedestal. Ivy has begun to wrap around the vase, which also is festooned with green drapery. On a ledge at the base of the pedestal is the felled game: a rabbit and three birds. The hunting display is surrounded by numerous trees and shrubbery. Mountains and a lake can be seen in the background, beneath a blue sky with pink and orange clouds and birds flying. After the original 17th-century by the famed Flemish painter, David Teniers II (usually referred to as “David Teniers the Younger”, as his father David Teniers the Elder was also an accomplished painter), this fabulous painting depicts a vibrant scene, both in color and theme. Our version, which was painted in the 1700s, is by an unknown, but very talented artist. The painting is surrounded by a giltwood frame with two layers of beading. Both Teniers were known for developing the “peasant genre” or “tavern scene”, where members of the working class were shown actively celebrating life. The earthy tones of the interior of the inn (brown and beige) are offset by citizens in brightly colored attire consisting of green, red, black, and gray. The scene is divided into two rooms, with seven patrons (mostly men) gathered around a barrel table in front of a very large fireplace. Two of the men are playing cards and there are two tankards visible. The calmness of this group is a drastic difference from the 11 people gathered in the foreground.
