A large 19th-century Orthodox icon of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
About the Item
An imposing religious-themed painting depicts the scene of the "Assumption of the Virgin". The iconography in this 19th-century painting follows the tendencies of Baroqueization and modernization of Serbian sacred art that began in the 18th century, in the Serbian community that settled north of the Sava and Danube, in the area of the then Habsburg Monarchy.
"The Assumption of Mary" is a direct reference to the eternity and virginity of the Mother of God herself, and also indicates the symbolic act of the coronation of the Mother of God, which took place after the ascension.
The painting "The Assumption of Mary" is in its original frame with gilded embossed plaster decoration.
