Large historical painting 18th century, Italian school "Darius' mother pleading before Alexander after the battle of Issus." Oil on canvas 210 x 290 cm Painted with great strength and visual impact in the size, number and variety of characters, but also in the warm tones and excitement that permeates the entire setting. Artists of all times have immortalized on their canvases, or depicted on the walls of noble palaces, the most famous episodes of the great leader's life. From the Renaissance onward, Alexander becomes an object of great admiration and considered an example of magnanimity, courage and deep humanity. Veronese, Bazzani and other masters made this episode famous, in which Queen Sisigambi throws herself at Alexander's feet apologizing to him for mistaking him for Hephaistion, but he forgives her and indeed reassures her, for though a prisoner she will be treated with full honors. However, it would seem that the artist wanted to condense multiple events into the same scene, where on the left is the battlefield, then there are the defeated and prostrate enemies, then Alexander offering in marriage to Hephaistion the princess Dripetides, younger sister of his wife Statira, both daughters of Darius; in short, a rich picture of events and at times not yet fully revealed.
