About the Item

Exquisite vintage Indonesian batik featuring a male and female figure in traditional dress. The brilliantly colored South Asian batik shows two figures, potentially in courtship. The topless figures both wear traditional head dress. Lively patterns of purple, orange, and yellow captivate the viewer. The colors evoke a sort of magical ambiance. Perhaps this scene is taking place at sunset with a seemingly fire-lit sky. It is clear that this piece was treasured by the previous owner. The framing is second to none! The burnt orange matte appears to be suede or velvet – a costly upgrade from typical board mattes. The frame itself is a thick faux bamboo with metallic finish. The batik is protected by an acrylic pane. No expense was speared during framing, hinting at the importance of the batik. Dimensions: 43″ Wide x 1.5″ Deep x 43.25″ High Batik is an Indonesian technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to the whole cloth. This technique originated from the island of Java, Indonesia. Batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called a canting, or by printing the resist with a copper stamp called a cap. The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allows the artisan to color selectively by soaking the cloth in one color, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colors are desired. Batik is very important to Indonesians and many people would wear it to formal or casual events. Batik is commonly used by Indonesians in various rituals, ceremonies, traditions, celebrations, and even in daily uses.

Painted in Peliatan, Ubud Bali by W. Kurpelir as signed on the bottom left hand corner. Balinese Folk Festival ceremonial procession, Ink and acrylic paint on canvas. Batuan painting evolved in the 1930s after a group of local villagers tested different forms with ink-washed paintings upon black backgrounds. These paintings often reveal Batuan’s cultural life, directly through their elements of line, shape, and tone. Meticulous design, craftsmanship, and strong visual impression are characteristic of the style. The painting comprise individual shapes which are painted in a precise and systematic manner that does not leave any empty space. The complexity of the paintings is inevitable as each of the strokes, lines, gradations, the characters or the subjects forms a delicate unity that finely balances the figure-filled canvas. Various gradations of colors separate different sections of the painting. The landscape is enticing and endless. About Bali Art...
