About the Item

Large Victorian Portrait Of A West Country Woman In A Dramatic Landscape, Antique Original Oil On Canvas Painting, 19th Century Depicting a confident and strong yet friendly and somewhat approachable-looking woman. She is dressed in a black dress pinched in at the waist with a pointed lace collar and cuffs and a portrait brooch on the neckline, most probably a piece of morning jewellery depicting a man’s head, The background takes the form of a very dramatic-looking landscape at dusk with a heavy sky. Overall the painting has a gothic quality to it which is full of feeling. Probably dating from the early Victorian, mid-19th century period. Circa 1840s-1850s. The painting has been passed down from generation to generation to the previous owner since its commission. Although the name of the sitter has been lost along the way the family is of Bristol origin in the West Country of England. Framed in its original and highly decorative gilt frame. The painting itself is in very good vintage condition. There is a somewhat dusty feeling to it, we have tried to leave it as original as possible. There are some small areas of wear including a few very small holes/tears to the canvas but these aren’t noticeable unless inspecting very closely. There is some craquelure to the surface in places and there is one area on her hair where some of the varnish appears to have reacted over time causing some cracking. This is noticeable from some angles and not others. The frame has survived well. There are some losses here and there and some natural wear commensurate with age but nothing seriously wrong. Overall measurements 126cm high x 95cm wide x 9cm deep.
