Late 19th Century French Oil Still-Life on Stretched Canvas by J. Bertrand
About the Item
A large and impressive late 19th century still-life. This antique oil painting on stretched canvas is signed by the French artist J. Bertrand (see lower right corner) but not dated. The painting features a classic kitchen inspired still-life of fish and seafood, vegetables and a copper pan.
The painting comes in its original frame: an equally impressive, ornate, gilded frame. A perfect match with the painting.
This artwork is in fair antique condition. The painting has not been cleaned or restored in my care, I leave that decision up to the new owner. However, when looking at the back it can be seen that the canvas frame has been reinforced at some point in time with an additional structure made of MDP board (see photos) and reinforced corners. Hence, today the painting has no structural issues. The frame shows wear, minor cracks and a missing chip on the left side. All flaws consistent with age and changes in temperature and humidity.
The painting itself also has minor flaws and signs of wear consistent with age. The painted surface shows quite some aging cracks and as a result even some small sections with missing paint (see photos).
Despite the above mentioned flaws, most of them due to natural aging, this painting remains a very decorative piece of antique, original French art.
