About the Item
Painted by the French painter, Edouard-Henri Muller, (1898-1973), this oil on canvas painting depicts a section of a garden at the Palace of Versailles. Specifically, the heavily wooded walkway is a part of the famed North Parterre, as indicated by a biography tag on the verso side of the painting. The scene is surrounded by a white matte border set inside a giltwood frame adorned with a lanceolate leaf border and a key pattern.
A footpath runs through the garden, in front of a line of trees with mostly turned leaves, although two trees on the far side of the walkway have retained most of their greenery. Based on the number of brown, red, orange, and yellow leaves on the ground, the scene most likely illustrates a mid-autumn day. Three Neoclassical statues on pedestals stand in front of the trees along the right side, with a barely visible fountain in the distance. The sky is overcast, yet unthreatening, giving a sense of calmness to the lovely garden scene. Interestingly, Muller was born at Versailles, and his paintings often captured areas of the vast estate. This French winter landscape painting from the 1800’s sits securely in the original giltwood frame. The hand-carved frame has several long ribbons, with sinuous fabric curls encompassing a repeating border of two distinct flowers. Large and Striking Antique French Oval Nature Morte Floral Oil Painting, C. 1850

A master-level painting surrounded by a thick and detailed gold leaf frame, this large oval oil on canvas has an impressive scale for a nature morte (still-life) painting. The painting, which dates to circa 1850, is by an unknown, yet extremely talented French artist. In stark contrast to the dark gray background, the subject of the painting is a brightly colored floral bouquet. The vibrant flowers (blue, red, yellow, pink, and white) reside in a brown woven basket that sits atop a stone baluster railing. A cluster of darkly colored grapes is strewn across the top of the railing, next to the basket, as two butterflies flutter above the bouquet. If you look closely, you will even see a third butterfly perched on one of the large green leaves that accompany the irises, carnations, and sunflowers. The equally impressive original frame is adorned with rings of beading, foliate rinceaux, and spiral fluting, with a deep convex molding carved with additional fluting.
