About the Item

Expressionist painting “A Lively Paris Street” by French artist Sylvain Vigny (1902-1970) related to the Paris and Nice schools. His work is characterized by brutal, powerful painting in warm, dark colors brushed with energy and enhanced by black strokes. 20th-century oil on plywood (undated) signed Vigny lower left. --- Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1902, Sylvain Vigny was a self-taught painter who moved to Paris in 1929, before discovering Nice in 1934. He quickly joined the artistic movement of the Paris and Nice schools, working alongside such figures as "Gen Paul", "Charles Bégo" and "Roland Dubuc". As his reputation grew, he regularly exhibited in renowned galleries in Europe and the United States. He died in Nice, his adopted home, in 1970. Leaving behind him a rich and varied body of work. His work was exhibited in the most prestigious galleries of his day, notably in New York (Douthitt Gallery, 1938), Paris (Bernheim Young, 1948 and Drouant Gallery, 1975) and Nice (Galerie des Pochettes, 1969). Numerous retrospectives have been devoted to him, testifying to the importance of his work. The one organized at the Petit Palais in Geneva in 1989 is a striking example. Works by Sylvain Vigny are included in the permanent collections of museums such as the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Musée National d'Art Moderne de Paris, the Musée Massena (Nice), the Musée national d'histoire et d'art du Luxembourg, the Musée des beaux-arts de Menton and the Lentos Kunstmuseum de Linz, among others. --- References and writings : E.
