"Love in the Woods, " Rare View of Bucolic, Gay Outing with Male Nudes
About the Item
Full of atmosphere and fresh color, this watercolor painting depicts a group of eight nude male figures in a wooded setting, holding hands, talking, admiring the view, and stealing off for a romantic moment, all expressed in vivid pink and tan flesh tones, and shades of spring and forest green. The artist -- Marie Bronislava Vorobyeva-Stebelska, who often signed her works "Marevna" -- a Russian painter who later moved to Paris and became connected to an array of the leading artists of the day, including Braque, Chagall, Cocteau, Matisse, Modigliani and Picasso. She became romantically involved with Diego Rivera, and later bore him a son. She is best known for her Pointillist works, but she was also influenced by Cubism, and was comfortable with gay and lesbian artists in Paris, which would explain this scene with multiple male figures. The media are watercolor and crayon on heavy paper.
