About the Item

Martin Feddersen, Windmill in the Moonlight, 1890s. Oil on wooden panel. Signed: "Martin Feddersen". Original frame. The versatile German painter, sculptor and art critic Martin Peter Georg Feddersen was born in Hamburg-Altona in 1849. From 1866 he studied painting with Wilhelm Frank at the Hamburger Gewerbeschule and worked with various important sculptors, such as Carl Börner (1828-1905). Feddersen's talent was fostered by scholarships, which enabled him to continue his studies from 1871 to 1873 at the renowned art academy in Munich, where he was one of the master students of the sculptor Max von Widnmann (1812-1895). 1875 and 1876 followed further training stays in Dresden and Weimar, before he settled in Hamburg. Feddersen created his own works, copied paintings by old masters, and from 1879 wrote theoretical art writings ("What is the task of the fine arts?"), gave lectures on art, and became involved in cultural-political issues. Especially with the director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Alfred Lichtwark (1852-1914), Feddersen threw himself in the towel because he rejected Lichtwark's museum and art pedagogical ideas. In 1914 he undertook an extended journey to Italy and from 1917 he was a full member of the Hamburger Kunstverein. Despite extensive travel within Germany, Feddersen remained very attached to his hometown and died in Hamburg-Altona in 1930. Feddersen often used regional motifs in his romantic landscapes. For the organization of the picture surfaces and the representation of individual components, he used a finely graduated, smoothed application of paint and often preferred a distant viewer's point of view, as in this painting. Other pictorial themes include historical depictions of cities and religious images. Several of his sculptural works can still be seen in situ at the main cemetery in Hamburg-Ohlsdorf. The Altona Museum owns the estate of Feddersen, which contained several oil paintings. His works can also be found in the international art trade.
