'Maw' Painting by Stephen Greene
About the Item
American artist Stephen Greene (1917-1999) created "Maw", a mixed media work on paper, in 1961. In 1958, after hearing a series of lectures by influential art critic Clement Greenberg , Greene abandoned the social realist imagery of his early career for the Color Field School of the mid 20th century American art world. His works are included in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Tate Gallery, London.
