About the Item

A beautiful, somewhat odd and a little sinister Mid-Century Modern oil on canvas painting featuring a innocent blue eyed boy holding a puppy with a mysterious, almost ominous shadowy figure of a woman standing down the gloomy alley behind. The work has a very darkly foreboding feel to it. The boy seems unaware of the dangers that await him should he set foot and continue down the path. But the artist does appear to offer the viewer a glimpse of hope symbolized in the of the blue sky that arises in the far distance above the dilapidation of the tenement project housing buildings on either side (notice how the sky echoes the same color of the boys eyes). It is a quite engaging if not a bit unnerving image. The painting is signed by the artist "Vastano" at the lower right. Though clearly quite skilled, we have had difficulty identifying who this artist is. We have found another painting of his/hers, quite good and much in the same vein thematically (the dark underbelly of the metropolis) and stylistically but no further biographical information. Like the work, it is a mystery to us. Likely painted in the 1950s-60s. Would be a great addition to any Mid-Century or Modern Art collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent artwork in about any setting. Dimensions: 37" high, 20.75" wide, 1.75" deep
