About the Item

A wonderfully detailed Italian 19th century Neo-Classical st. Oil on Canvas and Giltwood painting, signed Courbet. This stunning old master quality painting is set within its original Giltwood frame with an inner Rais de Coeur band and an outer Palmette design. The crumbling ruin displays an architectural exterior with detailed vegetation growing atop and on the sides. A male figure is seated outside on the steps while a female figure is gesturing towards him. Both figures are wearing classical attire. Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) was a pioneering French painter and the leading figure of the Realist movement in 19th-century art. Born in Ornans, France, Courbet rejected the romanticism and academic traditions of his time, instead choosing to depict ordinary people and real-life scenes with raw honesty and unidealized detail.
