About the Item

An elegant pair of 19th-century Biedermeier oil portraits, painted around 1870, presenting Baron Adam Franz Bernhard von Hirschberg and his wife, Charlotte Baroness von Hirschberg. Charlotte is portrayed with dark blonde corkscrew ringlets and braids styled into a refined chignon. She wears a beautiful gown with a lace frill and a double strand of pearls across her wide neckline, and a red sash bearing a ladies’ order—presumably the Russian Order of Saint Catherine. Opposite her, the Baron appears in full military dress, with a Bavarian officer’s gorget and multiple orders and decorations, reflecting his service as a Royal Bavarian Lieutenant Colonel and lord of the estates at Ebnath and Schwarzenreuth. On the reverse of both canvases, a handwritten inscription including their titles and traces their origin: “Copied from the original in Weihersberg.” Each painting is a slightly pastose oil on canvas, with subtle texture and visible brushstrokes adding warmth and depth. With natural signs of age and framed as a pendant. These European rare aristocratic portraits would be a remarkable addition to your interior.
