About the Item

This rare pair of large 19th century oil paintings features Julius Ferdinand Dreysel and his wife Friedericke, influental figures in the textile industry of Plauen, Germany. Painted around 1840 on multiplex panels, the portraits show Julius in a black jacket with grey vest and bow tie, and Friedericke seated in a high-necked black dress with a finely embroidered white blouse. Julius was a cotton and embroidery manufacturer. After his early death in 1867, Friedericke carried on the family business, a rare role for a woman of her time. Both panels carry original handwritten labels on the back confirming their identity and history. Each panel was originally designed to hang together. A unique historical duo that adds authentic 19th-century European charm and character to any interior.
