Pair of Vintage Indonesian/Balinese Paintings by Artist W. Suaridi

About the Item

Two absolutely fantastic, vintage paintings from Indonesia in a traditional Balinese style. One of the paintings is signed by the artist, W. Suaridi in the lower left (see photo). Both paintings demonstrate an impressive level of technical skill and aesthetic mastery. The paintings depict daily life in Bali and comprise individual shapes which are painted in a precise and systematic manner that does not leave any empty space. The complexity of the paintings is inevitable as each of the strokes, lines, gradations, the characters or the subjects forms a delicate unity that finely balances the figure-filled canvas. Various gradations of colors separate different sections of the painting. The landscape is enticing and endless. The complexity and the attention to detail are just amazing. Each square inch is a work of art in itself. In other words: two beautiful and unique, vintage pieces not to be missed! Both paintings are meticulously hand-painted in ink and acrylic on fiberboard/MDF support (see photos of back). They were most likely brought back to France sometime during the 1970/80s. The framing dates from the same period. Both paintings have been professionally, custom framed in France. The labels of the framer, Mannsfeld in Colmar, Alsace, are still on the back of the paintings. The wood frames are two-toned and have a shiny finish (see photos). The paintings are sold together as a pair. The painting are of the same hight but they are slightly different in width (28 cm versus 29.5 cm). In very good vintage condition. No fading, no humidity. There is only one scratch in the lower left corner of one of the paintings (see photo). The wood frames show minor signs of wear consistent with age (see photos). Dimension: height 40 cm/ 5 3/4", width 28 cm/ 11" and 29.5 cm/ 11 1/2", depth 1.5 cm/ 1/2". Weight as a pair: 1767 g/ 3.9 lb
