English Pointer and English Setter on point, one leg raised... sure a hunter someplace behind them. Great match to one we have by Ole Larsen made for the publication (O525). Period: 20th century Origin: Connecticut Size: 18" x 24", frame 29" x 22" Ernest Huntley Hart 'Ernest H. Hart': An American painter, printmaker, illustrator, and author, Ernest Huntley Hart perused his art studies at the Art Students League in New York. He was a member of the Association of Connecticut Artists and the Association of American Artists. During the 'American Depression Era', Ernest Hart contributed murals and easel works for the Public Works of Art Project, and the Federal Arts Project (WPA). Such works can be viewed at such locations as the New Haven County Jail, West Haven Firehouse, Troup Jr. HIgh School and the Community Chest in New Haven and other public institutions. After moving to Florida Ernie Hart completed a twenty five foot oil on canvas in his Florida studio which was donated to the The New Haven Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine. Although Hart's art also included human subjects and still life images, Hart's art predominantly dealt with animals showing a particular preference for the canine (dogs). Ernest Huntley Hart was proficient in the medium of oil painting, pastel, drawing, water color, and lithography. Many of his original works of art are signed, 'Ernest H. Hart', or 'E. H. Hart'. This original work of art entitled, "Mates" was created during the 'American Depression' era in the medium of lithography, and is signed 'Ernest H. Hart'. Ernest H. Hart's animal art is also well known through his numerous books. He has both authored and illustrated well over thirty books dealing with animals and most particularly, dogs. Early on in his career, he found great success with comics like Super Rabbit, and by 1946, he began illustrating and writing the comic book series Rocky Lane's Black Jack for 'Charlton Publishing' in Connecticut. Then came his brilliant association with TFH Publications, having written his first TFH edition entitled, This is the German Shepherd in 1955. In 1957, Ernest Hart became executive editor of Charlton's Real West Magazine. This, of course, was followed by a successful career as an author and illustrator of such fine books as, Budgerigar Handbook (1961), This is the Weimaraner (1965), The Poodle Handbook (1966), Your German Shepherd Puppy (1967), This is the Great Dane (1967), Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds (1968), The Cocker Spaniel Handbook (1968), Budgies in Colour (1974), and This is the Basset Hound (1974). Ernest H. Hart's book entitled, Living with Pets: a complete guide to choosing and caring for all kinds of pets (1977), and The Complete Guide to all Cats (1980), were both co-authored with his son, Allan H. Hart. Today Ernest Huntley Hart is recognized both for his art, and for his literary contributions. Fernand Maissen Oil on Panel Painting Depicting a Setter Hunting a River Mallard
Located in Atlanta, GA
A French oil on panel painting by Fernand Maissen from the early 20th century, depicting a sporting dog hunting a duck. Created in the early years of the 20th century by French artist Fernand Maissen, this horizontal oil on panel painting depicts a hunting scene. An English setter, coming from the right side of the composition, is hunting a river mallard rising from the waters. The high grass on the right, from which the dog is emerging, is perfectly contrasted by the horizontal strokes used to depict the water on the left. The artist further accentuates the contrast by juxtaposing warm and cold colors. Born in 1873, Maissen was an animal painter who was a student of Jules Lefebvre...
