A lovely pair of Flemish oil on board framed paintings in the Manner of David Teniers, late 18th century in date. The paintings delightfully present two compositions with Musketeers and townfolk in period costumes merrymaking outside a tavern in a rural setting. The artist used very vibrant pastel colours to add some mystery to the scenery and contrast the vivid greens of the foliage. Having received his first training in the painter's art from his brother Juliaen, he studied under Rubens in Antwerp, and subsequently under Elsheimer in Rome; he became a member of the Antwerp guild of painters in 1606. Though his ambition led him at times to try his skill in large religious, historical and mythological compositions, his claim to fame depends chiefly on his landscapes and paintings of peasants carousing, of kermesse scenes and the like, which are marked by a healthy sense of humour, and which are not infrequently confused with the early works of his son David. There is a large painting by the elder Teniers at St Paul's church in Antwerp, representing the Works of Charity. At the Vienna Gallery are four landscapes painted by Teniers under the influence of Elsheimer, and four small mythological subjects, among them Vertumnus and Pomona, and Juno, Jupiter and Io. The National Gallery has a characteristic scene of village life, Playing at Bowls, a Conversation of three men and a woman, and a large Rocky Landscape. This is a magnificent antique Dutch School floral still life oil on canvas painting with a stunning gilt gesso frame, late 18th century in date. This splendid painting is rectangular in shape and features brightly illuminated pastel-tinted roses and bi-colored tulips in the centre of the composition. The Celeste wildflowers behind them are seen against dark green foliage. The outline of the bouquet is defined by a charming poppy and further small white wildflowers. At the lower left, providing a counterbalance, is a splendid spray of red, white and Celeste flowers, trailing over the edge of the table and again fully illuminated. Great attention has been paid to individual elements in the bouquet. Indeed each petal has been painted with diligent conscientious precision. Around the bouquet, there are also three distinctive butterflies of different size and palette colors. The artist has captured the beauty of the bouquet perfectly well, giving the whole composition significant depth. Indeed this floral still life is characterized by its exceptional pastel hues and by a remarkable concentration on light and shadow on flowers and foliage. The arrangements of the bouquet appears truly realistic combining a convincing three-dimensionality with a delicate appearance. It is housed in its magnificent gilt gesso frame which is decorated with superb foliate decoration. Add this splendid antique Dutch painting to a very special wall in your home.
