Brun, well-know for the precision of his technic, by the elegance of its composition, the pureness of the colors, the refinement of the touch and the expressivity of the characters. This rare intimist scene in a interior decorated in the Pompeian style perfectly illustrates the taste of the time for the discovery of the villas of Pompei, thanks to the archeological excavations of the 18th century and the books published about them. To arrange its interiors based on the models of the Pompeian villas is then a trend that the most important people of that time will follow, as the Prince Napoléon, cousin of the Emperor Napoléon III, who orders the construction of a splendid Pompeian villa on the Avenue Montaigne, of which nothing remains but a few pictures and a painting by Gustave Boulanger, dated 1861 and called Répétition du « Joueur de flûte » et de la « Femme de Diomède » chez le Prince Napoléon. This painting illustrates the poem « Fletus passeris Lesbiae » from the collection « Carmina » written by Catulle (87-54 av. J.-C.) : in his work, the author, in love with Lesbie, a married woman living in Rome, puts on a show a sparrow as the main center of interest of its mistress who neglects her suitor. This theme has been represented many times in painting, like the version by Raphaël Poggi exposed at the Salon of 1865, or Lawrence Alma-Tadema in 1866 or Edward Poynter in 1907. Eugene-Henri Cauchois (French, 1850-1911) impressionist still life flowers with vase, oil on canvas. Signed lower right corner by the artist. Provenance: a private French collection. Professional restorations to verso, ready to hang. Dimensions approx (unframed) 20" x 24" or 50.8cm x 61cm. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Eugène Henri Cauchois was a pupil of Cabanel and Duboc. He exhibited at the Paris Salon as of 1874. Cauchois was a member of the Société du Salon des Artistes Français from 1890 onwards and was awarded bronze medals in 1898 and 1900, and a silver medal in 1904. He used a number of pseudonyms including F De Montaland, E Soyer, C Mary, Vermont and D Valmon. Towards the end of his life, Cauchois directed his efforts towards decorative compositions, producing among other things panels decorated with seasonal flowers for a school in the seventh arrondissement in Paris. His compositional style is characterised by vigorously applied and densely coloured brushstrokes. Early 19th Century Portrait of the Marsh Family Twins, by Thomas Arrowsmith (English: 1772 - 1834), circa 1830, an oil on canvas group portrait of the celebrated five children of the Marsh family of Boston. The two pair of twin girls and their younger brother became well known on both sides of the Atlantic in their day, because sets of twins were pretty rare, and these children were so ridiculously cute. Apparently the greatest artists of their day were all clamoring to paint their portraits. The Magazine Antiques ran an article on the children and their popularity about 20 years ago. The short hair cuts sported by the girls are quite striking, and are actually not as odd and rare as many people assume. While longer hair enhanced with ringlets and other curls were very much the popular fashion, a good number of parents did boldly break away with these daring short bobs. Perhaps they were the "bohemians" of their day. The style grew in popularity, even among adults, following the French Revolution: dubbed "Guillotine Haircuts" they declared sympathy for the deposed royals. In this particular instance, I believe the short hair was chosen because it focused more attention on the beautiful faces, and lessened the variations in height and hair color to make them all look even more alike. A delightful painting, slightly Romantic School, a touch Folk Art, in excellent condition and signed on the reverse.
