About the Item
A rare and important work by one of America's most important muralists working in the 1930s and 40s, this painting of a female figure on the edge of a magical forest, accompanied by a centaur in the distance, is richly colored in tones of jade, deep red and gold. The artist was James Owen Mahoney, who is best known for his work for the 1936 Texas State Building, part of the Centennial Fair Park constructed in Dallas. To this day, the ensemble of buildings in Fair Park is considered one of the two most important Art Deco architectural groupings in America, along with Rockefeller Center. With ties to Texas, where he was born, and to New York, where he spent much of his career, Mahoney was known for his mural painting. In Dallas he painted murals for the Federal Building and the Adolphus Hotel, and in Ithaca for the Clinton House. The artist repeatedly included mythological and Classical elements in his work, as here, giving them a dreamy, stylized quality. Mahoney taught art at Cornell University for many years, and a retrospective was exhibited at Cornell's Johnson Museum of Art in the 1970s. The painting is oil on textured artist board, and retains an old label on the reverse. Dimensions include the frame.
