About the Item
One of the most vividly painted and striking portraits of Native Americans ever painted in the 1920s, this oil on canvas depiction of a mother and child -- clearly reflecting centuries of painted Madonnas in Europe -- was made by Jean Hanau shortly after traveling to New Mexico. Hanau was intimately connected to Paris' leading painters and artists in the early 20th century, and exhibited at the 1913 Salon of Independents, the Salon of the Tuileries and the Salon D'Automne in the company of Matisse, Rouault, and Bonnard. However, the 1925 Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes in Paris -- which later gave the Art Deco style its name -- affected him deeply, and not long after he sought out the brilliant colors and figures of the American Southwest. Hanau was especially taken with the Pueblo peoples, depicting them with dramatic backgrounds -- such as the mountains and distant rainstorm seen here -- vivid colors and a stylization that was in keeping with the new Modernism. The painting is signed and dated on the lower edge. It is stretched but not framed.
