Ralph Avery New Mexico Scene, Watercolor Painting, Circa 1938-41

About the Item

Vintage watercolor painting features a scene in New Mexico with a female figure leaning on the wall of a church. The painting is signed by the artist in lower left corner; it has its original frame with handwritten note attached to the brown paper backing - Ralph Avery 1938-41, Toas, New Mexico, as well as the frame shop card. Ralph H. Avery (1907-1976) was an American landscape painter and watercolorist based in Rochester, New York. Avery was born in Savannah, Georgia, and moved to Rochester in the early 1920s to study at Rochester Institute of Technology (Athenaeum, and Mechanics Institute), earning his degree in 1928. From 1930 to 1931, Avery studied at Louis C. Tiffany Foundation, Oyster Bay on a scholarship; he studied with Charles Woodbury, Harry Leith-Ross, and Carl Peters, among others. Avery was a well-known illustrator, working for clients like General Motors, the Saturday Evening Post, and Reader’s Digest, for whom he created multiple magazine covers. He served as a faculty member in RIT’s Department of Applied Art for 25 years, leaving in 1953 to devote his energy to studio work. While Avery lived in Rochester for most of his adult life and frequently painted scenes from the local area, he also painted in Mexico, the West Indies, Europe, and Northern Africa. Ralph Avery held one-man exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institute, was a member of the National Academy of Design and the American Watercolor Society, and received many awards during his lifetime, including Pratt Purchase Prize, Grumbacher Purchase Prize, Rudolf Lesch Fine Arts Purchase Prize, and the prestigious Lillian Fairchild Award from the University of Rochester. In 1954, Avery’s work “Plymouth Avenue Rain,” chosen by the American Watercolor Society, was displayed in America’s Top 40 Works of Art. The artwork is 19.25 inches wide by 15.5 inches tall.
