About the Item

A stunning realist painting of a sleeping cat by the noted artist Stephanie Sale. This was likely painted in the late 1970’s along with another by the artist we have listed here and is titled “centripetalism”. It is framed in a simple wood frame with a painted liner. The painting itself is in good condition. Realist artist and photographer Stephanie Sale was born in Texas in 1946. From the artist’s website: She began painting at the age of ten, studying traditional and experimental treatments of various media and has continued her exploration of communication through visual media throughout her life. Sale is a graduate of The Holton-Arms School, Bethesda, Maryland and Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs New York. Sale lived and painted for more than twenty years in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, Canada. She exhibited in Montreal and Toronto from 1974 until her return to Texas in 1994 where she continues to paint and exhibit her paintings. Her work is represented in corporate and private collections in the United States, Canada and Europe. She resides and collaborates with her husband, architect Jim Singleton, FAIA in Bryan/College Station, Texas. COMMUNITY AND CIVIC In addition to her painting, graphic design, and photography Sale has committed herself to civic projects. As an active and enthusiastic supporter of cultural activities she has participated as a panelist in TAMU University/Community discussions on Women in the Arts, spoken and demonstrated to schoolchildren and community members and in radio and television interviews. In 2007 she was the recipient of The Pruitt Award given by the Brazos Valley African American Heritage Society for her efforts to bring the African American museum to fruition. She has served on the City of Bryan’s Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee. served as a Commissioner on the Historic Landmark Commission, on the board of directors of the Downtown Bryan Association, and currently serves as a Commissioner of the Bryan Business Council. She has worked with the City of Bryan and Brazos County on the reclamation of historic, though neglected, sites to create two public parks. These parks, opened in 2008 and 2016, are now favorites of schoolchildren and families. In 2016, Sale was a regional recipient of the Jefferson Award for volunteerism and community service. NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WOMEN IN THE ARTS Since 2010, Sale has been a member of The Texas Committee, the first—and perhaps the most enthusiastic state advocate group for The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C. NMWA is the only major museum in the world dedicated solely to championing women artists through exhibits and advocacy. Ms. Sale was president of The Texas Committee from 2014-2016 and has served on the NMWA National Advisory Board since 2016. She recently accepted the invitation to serve on the NMWA Board of Trustees, Washington D.C.
