About the Item

Oil on wooden board. Original frame. Signed "Alf Dedreux". Most likely a contemporary copy. The French genre and animal painter Alfred Dedreux (alternative spelling: de Dreux) was born on 23 May 1810 in Paris. Dedreux grew up in an artistic milieu, in which the world-famous and style-defining painter Théodore Géricault (1791-1824) played an important role as a close friend of the family. Already at the age of thirteen, Dedreux made the drawing "Un Maquignon", which is still in the Louvre today. The drawing is inspired by a lithograph by Géricault. Dedreux was trained as an artist by his uncle, the genre and portrait painter Pierre-Joseph Dedreux-Dorcy (1789-1874), before becoming a pupil of the classicist and romantic painter Léon Cogniet (1794-1880). Dedreux specialized in horse pictures and began his career in the Paris Salon of 1831 with equestrian scenes and equestrian portraits. Until 1859 he regularly equipped the salons with new works. In addition there were some works in the field of history painting. Due to his excellent comprehension and the authentic representation of English thoroughbreds, bulldogs and greyhounds, his dog paintings also enjoyed great popularity. He has been awarded several prizes. Following the revolution of 1848, Dedreux stayed in London and cooperated with his friend Eugène Louis Lami (1800-1890). He returned to Paris in 1852. The orders of Empress Eugenie and Napoleon III followed, both of which were equestrian portraits. In 1857, Dedreux was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honour. During this time he also worked on various pictures with motifs from equestrian sport. Alfred Dedreux died on 5 March 1860 at the age of 49 - the exact cause of the artist's death is unclear: a contemporary art historian claimed that Dedreux had died in a fall from a horse; in 1865 the historian revised this statement and now spoke of death by a duel. More recent research suggests that cancer is the cause of death; it is suspected that the various variants of the cause of death were disseminated to discredit the painter, but this failed. Works by Alfred Dedreux can be found in the most renowned art museums around the world, for example in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux ("Le Duc d'Orléans", 1844), in the Musée Condé in Chantilly ("Un Chien du Duc d'Aumale", 1853), in the Museum der Bildenden Künste in Leipzig ("Zwei stehende Jagdhunde", 1846), in the Louvre ("Randjiit Sing Baadour, Roi de Lahore", 1838), in the Castle of Versailles, in the National Gallery in Washington D.C. and in many other museums.
