About the Item
Painted at a time when the nation was increasingly interested in exotic places and peoples -- including Mexico, the South Pacific, Asia and the Southwest -- this Art Deco painting of a nude male Native American riding a brightly-colored horse brought the Wild West into the living room of, no doubt, a middle class American. The rider is holding a long lance, indicating that he is on the hunt, and his dark hair is flying in the wind. The painter was Duane Perrido, who painted other exotic subjects before and after World War II. The painting is gouache on textured paper, and is signed.
