About the Item

A contemporary oil on canvas titled "S.S' Verticals" by listed contemporary artist Jennifer Riley. Stripes of bold color cross the canvas. Signed and titled on the back of the canvas by the artist and dated 1999. Jennifer Riley was born and raised in Sharon, Connecticut in 1965. She received her BFA in a joint program from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; a diploma in translation from Rouen University (France); and her MFA from The Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College. She has an extensive career as an educator which includes positions at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, Montserrat College of Art, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn and Harvard’s Graduate School of Design Rome Summer Program, which she directed. In 2012 she began teaching in the MFA program at Indiana University where she is now a founding Associate Professor in the Master of Architecture Program. Her BBS1GG, Schmetterlinghaus (2021) mural (for “Big Bright Steel 1GAP Gallery"), at the heart of her exhibition in the residents’ lounge of the 1GAP Gallery, was their most ambitious single work in terms of scale and complexity, in 2021. Her critical writings have appeared in the New York Sun, Art Critical online and the Brooklyn Rail, and she has been the subject of over twenty solo exhibitions since 1992, most recently exhibiting her “machine series” paintings at Silas von Morisse Gallery, New York. She divides her time between Columbus and Brooklyn, maintaining studios in both cities.
