"The San Carlos" Original Painting by William Alexander Coulter

About the Item

(1949 - 1936_ 16” x 28” period frame 19” x 30”. Signed lower right. Undated. Estimate 1880s. Included is a letter from Coulter, Steel and Forged dated 1/24/69 by James Coulter, and a second handwritten letter dated 8/7/74 by James Coulter. In the letter he states “I would say it depicts the first night of the ‘San Carlos’ entry of S.F. Bay. This was the first known ship to enter the bay, and the log indicates she anchored off of what is now Sausalito for the first night. The background is Angel Island, and I think Alcatraz also shows. After that, she anchored in a cove off Angel Island in Racoon Straights, and from there explored the bay. My dad liked to paint this Spanish packer, and it is the subject of several paintings. All different. Your painting looks east from Sausalito in the Richardson Bay area. Seems like a very nice painting and I hope you always enjoy it.” Signed James Coulter. Also included is a 1957 Oakland Tribune article where the “Castco” painting was donated to the Oakland Museum, and six color Christmas cards from Coulter, Steel and Forged Co. showing different ships. William was born in Ireland and went to sea at age 13 for seven years as an apprentice allowing him to learn every detail of ships. Aboard the ships he would sketch and paint. By 1874, he was regularly exhibiting with the San Francisco Art Association. By 1890, he had a studio in San Francisco, and in 1896 joined the staff of the "San Francisco Call" as their waterfront artist. Between 1909-1920 William painted five mural panels for the Assembly Room of the Merchants Exchange Building which was the center of all trading and maritime business. In 1920, the US Postal Service immortalized one of his paintings with a commemorative 20 Cent stamp. From 1869 to 1936, he chronicled the shipping industry in San Francisco Bay, capturing the vitality of the square riggers, hay scows, tug boats and schooners that sailed in and out of the Golden Gate. "Chasing the Blackfeet" Original Oil Painting by Ace Powell
Located in Coeur d'Alene, ID
(1912-1978).Oil on canvas; 24" x 32". Son of a cowboy, Powell was raised in Apegar, MT, on the south side of Lake McDonald. His father was a stable boss, guide and tracker for Glacier National Park. As a boy, he watched Charles Russell paint in the Bull's Head Lodge in Apegar. PERIOD: Mid 20th century ORIGIN: Montana SIZE: 24" x 32" Biography: Apgar in Glacier Park was the gathering place for multitudes of artists drawn by the scenery, possible employment with Great Northern Railroad and sales to wealthy visiting art patrons. Bull Head Lodge, Charles M Russell summer home near by, was focus of the developing school. One can only guess at how great artists like Russell, Joe de Yong and host of others interacted with the young teen age wrangler who was likely first trying his hands with the tools of the art trade. Here though the seed was planted that would grow and lead Powell upon his own path and would blossom into over ten thousands works of arts drawn from first hand experiences along with those learned from firelight tales. Powell, like many others upon the frontier, followed the "Rounder" path of marriages, army service, hard drinking and cowboying, but like the lonely rider in many of his paintings whose horse is finally tied to the hitching post of a Northern Plains ranch cabin he found his home near Glacier National Park in Hungry Horse Montana . His home here from the 1950's till the 60's was like Charles Russell's with artists coming and going including his wife Nancy McLaughlin and his own son David Powell who started his trail to a Cowboy Artist of America induction here. After a fire in 1964, Ace Powell...

"Twilight in the Hills" Luminous Autumnal Painting by William Louis Sonntag
By William Louis Sonntag Sr. 1
Located in Wiscasset, ME
A luminous Autumn oil on canvas board landscape, probably of the hills in the Hudson River Valley, by the noted American artist William Louis Sonntag (1822-1900). Signed in the lower right. Sonntag was born near Pittsburgh, PA and moved to Cincinnati, OH in the 1840’s to study art. He studied for a brief time with G. Frankenstein at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Art and his idealized paintings of American wilderness and visionary paintings of imagined European ruins were commercially successful. He traveled twice to Europe in the 1850’s to improve his skills, eventually settling in New York City. He joined the National Academy of Design, where he exhibited his works for forty years. His mature works identify him with the Hudson River School of landscape painters. A romantic and naturalistic painter of his surroundings, Sonntag also created idealized paintings of Roman ruins, recalling his European trips of earlier years. Sonntag was an Associate (1860) and Academician (1861) at the National Academy of Design, and a member of the American Watercolor Society, Artists Fund Society, and the American Art Union...

Sumptuous Large Original William Foster Still Life Painting of a Banquet Table
By William Frederick Foster
Located in Tustin, CA
Sumptuous, very large, original oil on canvas board, still life painting depicting a banquet table. This painting is a virtuoso display of how artist William Frederick Foster (1883-1953) captures texture in paint. You can see this in the mouth watering fruit, crustacea and other samplings laid upon the table as well as the masterfully painted reflective surfaces of the copper tea pot, wine bottle and the gathered table cloth. Painting is framed in the original wood frame. Painting framed measures 34.5” high x 46” wide x 1.5” deep. Painting unframed measures 30.5” high x 42.5” wide. William Foster was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1883. He became a noted figure painter and illustrator, living the last twenty-one years of his career in Los Angeles, California. At age 12, he moved with his family to Colorado, but in 1898, he returned to Cincinnati and enrolled at the Art Academy where he studied with Joseph Henry Sharp and Frank Duveneck. His early ambition was to be a violinist, but he was re-focused on fine art when he saw a painting by Albert Ceck Wenzell. In 1902, he went to New York City where he painted scenery for theaters, auditoriums, and large department stores. He also studied at the New York School with Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase, and from 1903 to 1931, he worked as an illustrator and with a brief teaching stint in 1919 at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1903, he sold his first illustration, a depiction of high society, to Life magazine, and the style was very similar to Wenzell. From that time, he worked for most of the major magazines including Collier's, The Saturday Evening Post and Harper's Monthly. In 1926, he won the National Academy of Design's Thomas B. Clarke Prize for the best figure composition painted in the United States by a non-academician. The following year, he was voted an Associate Member based on his recognition for a figure work titled The Girl in Brown. During World War I, he operated his own ambulance in France as a member of the American Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps and also received mention as a camoufleur artist. Returning to the U.S., he resumed his illustration work and moved to Chicago, where he taught at the Art Institute. Foster moved to Los Angeles in 1932 and devoted his energy to painting, exhibiting and teaching. He taught at the Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles and gave private classes in his studio. He also worked on a mural project at the Hearst estate...
