About the Item

Although Walker Evans is world-renowned for his Depression-era photographs of ordinary men and women across America, many of them taken while serving as “information specialist” in the Resettlement (later Farm Security) Administration, a New Deal agency in the Department of Agriculture, he started off as an aspiring writer and dabbled in painting over the years. Although this painting is believed to be by Evans, very little is known about his early painting. In any case, this painting is a superb example of WPA-style portraiture, and in the tradition of Evans' documentary photographs, it depicts a dignified, handsome man who appears careworn from the demands and rigors of work and life. The medium is paint on canvas. (Dimensions include frame.)
