About the Item

Originally the backrests to a set of Spanish leather chairs dating to around the 1880s, these studded chair backs have been painted more recently with dated heraldic displays. The chocolate-colored leather is dotted by numerous brass nailheads that also surround the vibrant coat of arms. 1812: a quartered square, emblazoned in an alternating manner with white lattice over blue background beneath a gold bar and three tied ribbons on a white background, all surrounded by black and white bars 1793: a green rampant lion with red tongue and claws over a yellow background, surrounded by yellow and blue bars 1771: a quartered square of blue and white fields, emblazoned with red Xs and yellow suns in an alternating fashion, surrounded by black and white bars 1801: a quartered square of red and yellow fields, surmounted by a dexter bend with blue and white geometric shapes, surrounded by numerous red and yellow sinister bends 1752: an indented square of blue and yellow, emblazoned with two yellow birds with wings displayed and expanded, separated by a blue dexter bend with small birds flanking a lattice, surrounded by blue and yellow sinister bends 1782: six fields of unequal sizes with multiple undée bends and pales of alternating black and white, accompanied by red saltires over yellow, all surrounded by black and white bars Our set of six hand-painted leather chairbacks would make wonderful pieces of art for just about any room of the house.
