In 1905, he became the director of an art school in Bruges, solidifying his connection to the European art scene.
In Detroit, Paulus played a key role in the local arts community. He was a painting and drawing instructor at the Detroit Art Museum (now the Detroit Institute of Arts) and later became a trustee of the institution. He also co-founded the Detroit Art Academy, where he helped shape the next generation of American artists.
